Vulnerability, Fear, and the Need to Belong w/Pedro Silvas
Content warning: This episode includes discussions of sexual assault, childhood abuse, domestic violence, and systemic oppression.
We live in a culture that celebrates strength, independence, and self-sufficiency. But what happens when our efforts to appear invulnerable keep us from speaking up, asking for help, or protecting one another?
In this episode, Emily and Courthney welcome back Pedro Silvas, minister, writer, Enneagram practitioner, and liberation comedian, for a passionate conversation about vulnerability, masculinity, and the systems that shape how we respond to injustice.
Drawing on personal experiences of trauma, racism, and loss, Pedro explores the ways fear and the desire to belong can keep people silent, even in the face of harm. Together, we examine the cultural conditions that enable sexual violence, the influence of white supremacy and individualism, and the difficult balance between protecting ourselves and standing up for others.
We also explore the possibility of approaching vulnerability differently, not as something to hide or overcome, but as an opening for mutual support, accountability, and stronger communities.
